What happens when you get early access to technology that feels like it is from the future?
Since early 2023, I have had the privilege of being part of the Microsoft Copilot private preview program through my employer. Together with my AI wingman Helge Dommerby , we have been laying the tracks while the train is moving - exploring, experimenting, and discovering what Microsoft Copilot can do for knowledge workers. Now that Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 is generally available, I want to share five reasons why I believe AI will fundamentally transform your future.
The privilege of being a forerunner
Being part of a private preview is equal parts exciting and challenging. There is no playbook, no best practices document to follow, and no community of experienced users to lean on. You are the ones creating the playbook. Helge and I spent countless hours testing prompts, discovering capabilities, hitting limitations, and figuring out how to integrate Microsoft Copilot into real workflows.
What struck me most was not the technology itself - it was the realization of how profoundly it would change the way we work. Here are five reasons why I believe AI assistants like Microsoft Copilot will transform your future.
1. AI removes the blank page problem
Every writer, analyst, and knowledge worker knows the dread of staring at a blank page. Whether it is a report, a presentation, or an email, getting started is often the hardest part.
Microsoft Copilot eliminates this friction. Ask it to draft an outline, generate talking points, or create a first version of your document, and suddenly you have something to work with. The blank page becomes a starting point, and your role shifts from creator to editor. This simple change has a profound impact on productivity and reduces the mental energy required to begin any task.
2. AI amplifies your expertise
A common misconception is that AI will replace experts. My experience suggests the opposite - AI amplifies expertise rather than replacing it.
When I use Microsoft Copilot to draft a technical document, it does not replace my knowledge of endpoint management or PowerShell. Instead, it accelerates my ability to articulate that knowledge. I can focus on the substance - the insights, the recommendations, the nuances - while Copilot handles the scaffolding. The result is not less expertise but more efficient application of expertise.
3. AI democratizes capabilities
Not everyone is a skilled writer, a confident presenter, or a data analyst. AI assistants level the playing field by giving everyone access to capabilities that were previously reserved for specialists.
A project manager who struggles with written communication can now produce clear, professional documents. A developer who dreads creating presentations can generate polished slides. This democratization does not lower the bar - it raises the floor. More people can contribute at a higher level, and organizations benefit from the collective improvement.
4. AI changes how we think about time
During the private preview, I started noticing something unexpected: my relationship with time changed. Tasks that previously took hours now took minutes. But more importantly, I began thinking differently about what was possible within a given timeframe.
When you know that Microsoft Copilot can help you draft a document in ten minutes instead of an hour, you become more ambitious. You take on projects you would have declined. You explore ideas you would have dismissed as too time-consuming. AI does not just save time - it expands your sense of what is achievable.
5. AI requires a new skill: prompting
Perhaps the most surprising lesson from the private preview was discovering that using AI effectively is itself a skill. The quality of output depends heavily on the quality of input. Vague prompts produce vague results; specific, well-structured prompts produce remarkable results.
This “prompt engineering” - or as we like to say, prompting is the new dialect - is becoming an essential skill. Those who master it will extract significantly more value from AI assistants than those who do not. It is a new literacy, and like any literacy, it can be learned and improved. And just like spoken dialects, each AI solution has its own subtle differences. Despite prompting being fundamentally similar across different tools, you will discover that each has its own dialect - small nuances and preferences you need to learn to get the best results.

Here is a telling example: I recently asked Helge if he still uses search engines like Google. His answer was completely dry: “I never google anything, I use Microsoft Copilot.” That response perfectly captures the shift we have experienced.
As our prompting skills evolved, we noticed something curious - our traditional search skills actually got worse. We transitioned from thinking in keywords and search terms to thinking in context and conversation. Instead of crafting the perfect search query, we learned to describe what we needed as if we were talking to a colleague. The results were remarkable. Once you learn to prompt effectively, going back to keyword-based searching feels limiting.
Elements for an effective prompt
Tell Microsoft Copilot what you need - include the right elements, or dialect.
Any good prompt should have a goal. Whether it comes in the form of instructions or questions, the prompt should indicate what you want out of your session, and you should include the following elements when writing a prompt:
- Goal - specific information you need
- Context - why you need this information or how you want to use it
- Source - known information, data sources, or plugins Microsoft Copilot must use
- Expectation - the format or target audience you want the response tailored to
You do not need all four elements in every prompt - three is a good minimum. However, the more context you provide, the better the result will be.
AI is transforming development too
While my focus has been on Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365, the same transformation is happening in software development with GitHub Copilot. Developers are experiencing many of the same benefits - and facing the same learning curve.
GitHub Copilot provides intelligent code completion, suggesting entire lines or blocks of code as you type. It understands context, supports multiple programming languages, and can generate code snippets for common patterns. For developers, the blank page problem becomes the blank function problem - and GitHub Copilot solves it the same way.
What excites me most about GitHub Copilot is how it accelerates learning. Junior developers get real-time guidance and best practices as they code. It is like having a patient mentor looking over your shoulder, suggesting improvements and catching mistakes early. This does not replace the need to understand code - you still need to review, validate, and understand what Copilot suggests - but it dramatically speeds up the journey from novice to proficient.
For experienced developers, GitHub Copilot handles the routine and repetitive, freeing mental energy for architecture decisions and creative problem-solving. The same pattern we see with knowledge workers applies: AI amplifies expertise rather than replacing it.
Looking ahead
As I write this in January 2024, Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 has just become generally available. The journey from private preview to general availability has been remarkable, and I am convinced we are only seeing the beginning.
Whether you are a knowledge worker using Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 or a developer using GitHub Copilot, the underlying transformation is the same. AI is becoming a partner in our work - not replacing what we do, but changing how we do it. The organizations and individuals who embrace this shift early will have a significant advantage.
